Biboye Onanuga presents Low & Slow at the Yardbird Suite

The Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclast ensemble of local musicians, sensitive to the music of the moment.

Biboye invites you to bathe in the sea of transcendent, meditative vibrations for the modern age. Biboye embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music as a balm — ephemeral expression, cutting through the noise of our modern world. A world built for speed, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.

The quintet’s setlist of original tunes and arrangements is inspired by avant-garde greats who eschew genre, strive for sonic innovation, and dive deep in every performance; Artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Alice Coltrane and the acoustic work of contemporary players Ambrose Akinmusire, Aaron Parks’ trio (Matt Brewer & Eric Harland), and drummer Craig Weinrib (w/Sam Harris).

Biboye Onanuga is a British-born, Nigerian-Canadian drummer, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school, he quickly became a sought-after player — recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized artists such as Odario (of CBC Radio’s Afterdark) and Tanika Charles, as well as local mainstays Jim Head, and Mboya Nicholson, to name a few. Biboye has made meaningful contributions to the local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band (Good information), 3-year-tenure weekly music series (New Standards) and more recent Sunday Jazz series (Daze Days).

After angering Zeus, the Fates – the goddess sisters who spin, measure, and snip the strings of life for every human on Earth – find themselves banished to a modern office building in the mortal world, where they continue their work hidden among the mortals whose destinies they weave into one giant, glorious tapestry. When eldest sister Atropos meets Mickey, the building’s overnight security guard, love gets the better of her and begins to disrupt the natural order. Can the tapestry of the Universe and her sisters stand this flaw? Fall for this original, uplifting, and belty musical about fate, love, and the imperfections that make us human. The Citadel Theatre’s 2024-25 Young Company students (ages 16-21) have been training at the Citadel since September. String is a culmination of their work in this specialized program designed for young adults pursuing careers in professional theatre.
